AUGUSTIS
Kids playing in a deserted property in Bia?ystok found a treasure. A collection of negative films made by a pre-war photographer, Boles?aw Augustis. The films went to a reporter of Gazeta Wyborcza daily, Grzegorz D?browski (a WIDOK member), who carefully cleaned them up and held an exhibition. It was an interesting as a document of the time that was. The old photographer demonstrated a very modern take on form and ironic treatment of his objects. Boles?aw Augustis lived in Bia?ystok in the 1930s and pictured the everyday life of the town.
During the Soviet occupation (1940), he was arrested by NKWD and brought to Siberia. From there, he joined Anders?f army, fought with it and ended up in the UK. He never came back to Poland and went to live in New Zealand, where he died in May 1995. His photos were discovered 10 years later.
The photos were exhibited in Galeria Arsenal in Bialystok, during the Photo Month in Paris and at the Polish Institute in Berlin and Jeugawa.
